Good proportion is what makes a room feel settled, and the rug is where it most often goes wrong: a rug that is too small breaks a room into pieces. Every page here shows the reason behind a size in inches, so the rule makes sense and you can use it in any room, not only the ones on this site.

Every recommendation follows the same rules: 24-36 in of rug beside a bed, the front legs of every seat on a living room rug, 24-36 in of rug past a dining table, and 8-18 in of bare floor at the walls. The rug size calculator measures each standard size against them and recommends the one that fits best.

The guides quote the calculator, so a size named in the text is always the size the calculator picks for that room.
