What size rug for a king bed?

A 9x12 rug is the best size for a king bed. Laid with the 12 ft side across the bed, it leaves 34 in of rug on each side of the 76 in wide mattress and 28 in past the foot. An 8x10 also works, but only just, with 22 in on each side, so it is the better choice when the room is narrower than 13 ft 4 in.

Why a king bed needs a 9x12

A king is 16 in wider than a queen, and that changes the math. The same 8x10 that gives a queen 30 in of rug on each side gives a king 22 in: enough to step on, not enough to frame the bed. A 9x12 brings the sides back to 34 in, inside the 24-36 in range designers aim for.

Scale matters more as furniture grows. A large bed on a rug that barely clears it looks crowded; the extra foot on each side lets the bed sit in the room instead of perching on the rug.

8x10 vs 9x12 rug under a king bed

Pick by room width. A 9x12 across the bed is 144 in wide, so it needs a room at least 13 ft 4 in wide to leave 8 in of floor at each wall. In a narrower room the 9x12 runs into the walls, and an 8x10 looks better even with less rug beside the bed.

A 10x14 is the next step up. It leaves 46 in on each side, which only suits a large primary bedroom (15 ft 4 in wide or more) where the nightstands and a bench sit on the rug too.

How to place a 9x12 rug under a king bed

  1. Turn the rug so the 12 ft side runs across the bed.
  2. Center it, so 34 in shows on each side.
  3. Push it up to the headboard wall. With a 9x12 the nightstands sit fully on the rug, which keeps them level.
  4. About 28 in of rug then extends past the foot of the bed.

What about a 6x9 under a king bed?

A 6x9 is 108 in long, 32 in wider than a king, so it shows 16 in on each side, below the 18 in minimum. Under a king it looks like an afterthought. If the budget is tight, two 2 ft 6 in x 8 ft runners beside the bed do more for the room.
