What size rug for a dining room?

A dining rug should reach 24-36 in beyond every edge of the table, so chairs stay on the rug when someone pushes back to stand. For a 6-seat table (about 72 x 36 in) that means a 9x12, which gives 36 in on every side; an 8x10 is the minimum, with 24 in at the ends. A 4-seat table takes an 8x10 and an 8-seat table a 10x14.

Why 24 in is the minimum

A dining chair is about 18-20 in deep, and people push back another 6-12 in to stand up. With less than 24 in of rug past the table, the back legs drop off the edge every time someone stands, which wobbles the chair and wears the rug. 30-36 in keeps the chair on the rug even when it is pulled all the way out.

Round dining tables

A round table sits best on a round rug, which echoes its shape. The rug needs to be 48-72 in wider than the table: a 42 in table on an 8 ft round leaves 27 in all round. Tables over 48 in across outgrow the standard 8 ft round, so use a 9x12 or a 9-10 ft round.

Should you put a rug under a dining table?

Yes, if it is big enough and flat enough. A flat-weave or low-pile rug lets chairs slide and is easy to clean under. Skip it if the room cannot fit a rug 24 in past the table on every side: a rug that catches the chair legs is worse than bare floor.
