What size rug for a California king bed?

A 9x12 rug is the best size for a California king bed. Laid with the 12 ft side across the bed, it leaves 36 in of rug on each side of the 72 in wide mattress and 26 in past the foot. An 8x10 also fits well, with 24 in on each side, and it is the better choice in rooms narrower than 13 ft 4 in.

Why a California king takes a 9x12

A California king is 4 in narrower and 4 in longer than a standard king (72 x 84 in against 76 x 80 in). The narrower mattress helps the rug: a 9x12 shows 36 in on each side instead of 34, and even an 8x10 reaches the 24 in mark.

The extra length works the other way. It pushes the foot of the bed further into the room, so a 9x12 slides all the way up under the nightstands to keep about 2 ft of rug past the foot.
