What size rug for a queen bed?
An 8x10 rug is the best size for a queen bed. Laid with the 10 ft side across the bed, it leaves 30 in of rug on each side of the 60 in wide mattress and 34 in past the foot, so both feet land on rug when you get up. Why an 8x10 fits a queen bed
A rug under a bed has one job: to be under your feet when you step out of bed. That takes 24-36 in of rug beside the mattress, about one stride. A queen is 60 in wide and an 8x10 turned sideways is 120 in across, which leaves 30 in on each side. It is the one standard size that lands in the middle of that range.
Depth matters as much as width. The rug should start just in front of the nightstands, so they stand level on the floor, and still reach 18-36 in past the foot. Under an 80 in queen that takes a rug 6 ft 6 in to 8 ft deep. An 8x10 turned sideways is 8 ft deep. A 6x9 is only 6 ft, so it either stops short of the foot or leaves 7 in of bare floor in front of the nightstands, which makes the rug look like it slid away from the bed.
The rug also sets the scale of the bed. A rug that stops at the bed frame makes the bed look like it sits on a bath mat; one that extends well past it gives the bed a base, the same way a wide mat around a print gives it room on the wall.
How to place an 8x10 rug under a queen bed
- Turn the rug so the 10 ft side runs across the bed, parallel to the headboard wall.
- Center it on the bed, so 30 in of rug shows on each side.
- Slide it toward the headboard until the top edge sits just in front of the nightstands, about 18 in from the wall. The nightstands then stand level on the floor, and the lower 62 in of the bed sits on the rug.
- That leaves about 34 in of rug past the foot of the bed, enough for a bench or a place to land.
8x10 vs 9x12 under a queen bed
A 9x12 leaves 42 in on each side of a queen, which starts to read as wall-to-wall carpet in an average bedroom. It needs a room at least 13 ft 4 in wide to leave 8 in of floor at the walls. Choose it for a large room where you want the nightstands and a bench on the rug as well.
Can a 5x7 or 5x8 rug go under a queen bed?
A 5x7 is 84 in long, only 24 in wider than a queen, so it shows 12 in on each side: less than the width of a nightstand. It works better across the foot of the bed, or beside the bed when one side stands against a wall. A 5x8 shows 18 in on each side, the bare minimum.
If the budget is the limit, two 2 ft 6 in x 8 ft runners, one on each side of the bed, cover the same landing spots as an 8x10.
